Your situation might also be a good candidate for bidding via Priceline. Sounds like you have some flexibility in dates which would let you put in a series of gradually increasing bids the same day. You can bid every 24 hours with a new series, also.

If you try bidding, a few caveats:

Be sure to watch the second page on the bidding where the taxes and fees are added in. That is what you will actually pay if your bid works.
No refunds.
Schedules can be very early and/or very late.
