In 9BC on the 120, you put it under the seat in front of you and unless you're 7+ feet tall you won't know it's there. I guess if you're one of 'those' who bring 2 carry-ons onto planes, one for your computer/valuables and one for your clothes/etc, then gate checking the clothes would be ok. Does anyone gate check their computer bag?
The bins on the EMB120 are actually pretty big. It's the door opening that is small. You can fit a large duffel in there if it's soft enough to squish though the opening.
