What you encountered can happen with any hotel chain or any hotel for that matter. Its not a problem you would just encounter with Wyndham family of brands. It could happen at Marriott, Hilton, Choice, etc.
You are right about not being able to recognize an ownership change as a customer. But the change of affiliation is something that can more easily be determined. Clues that a hotel has change brands would be things like hotel not showing up on the one brand's website, hotel answer their phones differently, etc.
