Thank you for the reply!
I have a H1-B (work) visa in the US. I have applied for various tourist/transit visa in the past and I have no problems getting them in the US. Just out of curiosity though - why is Malaysian passport holders on the "blacklist"?
I wanted to get a visa not only for the transit in Shanghai, but also I want to make sure that I am able to check-in for my flights. I nearly missed my flight to Tokyo last time because I was arguing with a check-in agent that I do not need a visa in Japan if I am staying under 72 hours (Malaysians are elgibile for a shore pass - transit without visa for 72 hours).
Edited: Malaysians are not required to have a visa to enter Japan for a period of less than 90 days, but it's "highly recommended."
The bizzare routing is due to my award travel!

Initially, I wanted to stopover in Shanghai for a couple of days before proceeding to KUL...but my plans have changed and I am no longer stopping over in Shanghai. SQ doesn't have any award availability between ICN and SIN while UA blocked TG and OZ flights between ICN and SIN/BKK.
