Can airport security guarantee that it will detect an actual weapon or device? No.

Is there a pretty good chance that airport security will detect an actual weapon or device? Yes.

Is that good enough at that point in the system? Yes.

If you do not understand why, you're making the error of looking only at the efficacy of the airport security checkpoint in isolation from the entire picture. If you really understood the big picture, you'd understand why this is good enough.

Oh, and one other question, but perhaps you'd like to answer it: If airport security cannot guarantee that it will detect an actual weapon or device, is that a good reason for not trying to do as good a job as possible? I don't think anyone suggests that "as good a job as possible" shouldn't include doing it efficiently and politely at all times. But you seem to be suggesting that it shouldn't really be done at all.

No, thanks. I can discuss it with people who know infinitely more about the subject of international terrorism than anyone engaged in a discussion on TS&S.

But if you do think that you know better, perhaps you'd like to set out your qualifications and experience in the subject of international terrorism? (It's tempting to suggest that if you can do so publicly, then by definition they're not good enough. But I wouldn't want to fall into the trap of error through hyperbole, so I won't say it.)
