There is NOT realistic free overnight residential parking near the hotel unless you hit the lottery. Behind the hotel is Ansley Park and they WILL ticket you to the tune of $25 (still less than what the hotel charges). You can try to park on 12th or 13th street (east of Peachtree), but looking for spots there is a waste of time - you can't plan on there being a spot and you need to read the signs carefully. The most convenient is probably to park in the Colony Square pay lot (which is where the valet will park your car). I'm not sure what the overnight rate is, but I'd be surprised if it is greater than $12. The benefit to this lot is that there is 24 hour access without a secure access badge and you can walk from the hotel to your car without being exposed to the elements. Additionally, I don't know of any other office complexes that are accessible by the public 24/7. There's a surface lot (with garage) at the the corner of 16th and Peachtree that is $7 and if you park in the surface lot you won't have issues getting out. Supposedly, your ticket would open the gate in the structure, but I would not bet my mobility on it. There's also a surface lot at 13th and Peachtree between the Atlanta Women's club and 1100 Peachtree Street. If you're intrepid, you can park in residential Midtown south of 10th street. Again, read the signs carefully and don't even think of parking in front of my driveway...you'd be surprised how many people think that seems like a reasonable place to park.
Also, if you park in an unsecured lot or on the street (or anywhere in Atlanta for that matter) you cannot leave anything in your car within sight. NOTHING. Not even a nickel. We in the neighborhood appreciate your vigilence.
