A alternative would be Kreuzberg. However Berlin has some very big differences in small areas (The distance between the Schloss Bellevue, where the German Head of states resides and the one of the biggest prison is 10 to 15 min by foot).
When you choose you hotel, you should pay attention that the Hotel lies within the S-Bahn circle(something like the circle line in London), and the next S-Bahn or underground station is easily reachable.
