Doing a SB cruise in late Aug (two couples & young teenager). Am thinking of renting car and taking drive into Yukon from Skagway and trying to decide best way to utilize the 10 hours in Juneau -- can we do Harv & Marv and still get to glacier? Ketchikan seems like it might be more of a city tour than an excursion. We're first timers, so all advice welcome! Thanks
Harv and Marv's trips (and most similar whale watching excursions, I believe) are about three hours long. They actually dropped us at Mendenhall Glacier afterwards about 12:30. There are also buses from downtown to the glacier. You have plenty of time to go to the glacier, whale watch, walk around town thoroughly, go up the Mt. Roberts tramway if you wish, etc.
For Skagway, driving up to the Yukon will be nice. We took the train up and then had a guide drive us back to Skagway. (In late May, it was snowing heavily around Fraser and Carcross.) It's quite interesting; make sure you go at least as far as Emerald Lake. If you don't have particular interest in the train, renting a car with 5 people is much more cost-effective.
