Just to echo others' experiences, I used 2 of my upgrades w/o problem (1 in New York and 1 in Dubai). The only place that refused to accept it (claiming no availability - I still have to double check on that) is HR Santa Clara. You were already given the best advice to call the US Diamond Desk.
