I think that may have been a combination of French laziness and humour (i.e. too lazy to go and ask, so fobbed you off with a humorous response!).

On a two pilot aircraft one pilot would be allowed to have a short snooze, but coordinated so the other would have to be awake. However, this length of flight would hardly necessitate any sleep anyway!
