All optimism on the part of airport managers seems to have gone out the window. I will be travelling back through Toronto on Sunday and Tuesday. If last time is any indication, the weekend should be OK but the weekday can be messy if you are arriving from outside the airport. Delays of up to 1 hour getting into the airport have been noted! Take a look at the latest press release:
PSAC STRIKE AT LBPIA
GTAA Status Update #7:
Issued 3:00 p.m. Oct. 27, 1998
TORONTO - The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) appears willing to sacrifice the incomes and security of Pearson Airport employees in order to achieve a national agenda, says the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA).
Pickets resumed this morning at the parking entrances of Terminal 3 following the withdrawal by PSAC from wage negotiations this weekend.
Mr. Shaw added that GTAA will not negotiate while the union is engaged in the unlawful targeting of the travelling public and alarming them unnecessarily about safety at the airport.
"The union is not targeting the GTAA. They are targeting people not involved in the dispute," he said.
The airport safety issue was addressed earlier, with Transport Canada confirming on October 16 that there were no immediate safety concerns at Pearson airport, Mr. Shaw added.
"Transport Canada have been monitoring the situation throughout the strike and no concerns have been raised" he noted.
In the meantime, the GTAA will continue to operate Pearson Airport with management staff, he added.
"We will continue to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that Pearson Airport operates safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to the travelling public," Mr. Shaw stressed.
