I think you have better flexibility renting a car from Dublin airport, rather than taking a train to Galway. FWIW I think it's a great idea staying in Dublin for 3 days because it gives your body time to adjust to the time zones, what road signs look like and you'll get into the car refreshed (not frazzled by a sleepless overnight flight).
Here is my latest plan. Thanks for all the suggestions, and I'm still up for suggestions.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights in Dublin.
Firday morning pick up rental car at Dublin Airport and head toward Dingle. I have read estimates it will take 4.5 hours - 6 hours or 8 hours. If it's a long drive we could stop in Adare at the Dunraven Arms Hotel for Friday night. Or we might drive straight through to Dingle. Spend Saturday and Sunday nights in Dingle, at the Benners Dingle Hotel.
Monday head for Doolin, and see the Cliffs of Moher. Monday night in the Doolin.
Then Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Galway. Considering staying at the the Park House Hotel or the Hotel Meyrick. Thought this would give the Mrs a little fix of City life after Dingle and Doolin. We considered The "G" Hotel in Galway, but it looks like it's not walking distance to town.
Thursday night we might stay closer to Shannon Airport for a Friday morning flight.
We also wanted to spend a night or two at the AbbyGlen Castle Hotel in Clifden, but that would mean giving up time some where else.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. The plan has more checking in and out of hotels than We would like. It would be nice to just stay 3 hotels , 3 nights each, then 1 at the airport , but .... who knows...
