Perhaps this is an attempt to get the elevators to function more efficiently. On a Sunday morning, we waited almost 15 minutes

for an elevator to arrive to take us downstairs. We ran into other folks in the hotel lobby who were on lower floors and they just walked all the way down instead of waiting for the elevators. It's a very large hotel.
There was a notice posted indicating it was new. It never took more than two minutes of waiting, and frequently was much less, so it is definitely and update and an improvement since you were there.
