My condolences to your family. As for the remaining 6K miles, you can easily do that in one RT transcon depending on where you live. I live in Miami and the following itinerary, MCO/TPA/MIA-IAD-LAX-SFO-LAX-IAD-MIA/TPA/MCO could easily earns 7K.

BTW, there is this fare posted for SFO-BUF, which can be had for $187 and earns 6.5K EQMs if routed via LAX and IAD.
