I'm flying SFO-CDG on Wednesday in Y class and have no FF elite status with DL or AF, which I believe means my only option for an upper deck "upgrade" is to check in online early and pay for one.

My questions about this are:
1) I'm flying on a DL award ticket. Does that make me ineligible?
2) If not, are these seats generally available if you check at the earliest possible time (30 hrs. early)? Are they gone by then as a result of FF elite pre-booking? Or do a bunch of people hover over their laptops 30 hrs before the flight trying to snag them like Hannah Montana tickets?
