Some people try all kinds of actions to get upgraded, like checking the web to see if there is avialability, then confronting the manager, if there is and they weren't upgraded. Others just take the room assigned and skip the confrontation. I suppose it depends on how often this happens to you, at what hotels, and how long you are going to be there, as well as your love/hate of persuasion/confrontation.
