Well, it's not completely impossible, but it would require a very long trip, with a couple of reversals of direction, and a trip through either the 207th Street Yard, or the Concourse Yard. See here:

The reviews I have read for the remake compare it unfavorably to the original, so I think I will pass on the remake.
The way it is portrayed in the movie it is, they reached 34th street, and the override of the dead man's break was applied, and the train proceeded south to Coney Island.
[As in the original movie, the baddie said that he wanted a straight path with all green signals...]
