You're right that it makes no sense. I routinely fly domestic trips without showing my ID to any airline employee - only to the screener at the TSA checkpoint.
My airline has no idea what ID I showed the TSA and no idea of the various names on my various IDs.
So the whole new layer of security SecureFlight affords us, is provided by check-in personnel. Who as you point out, often don't even ask to see ID which they're been required to do for some time.
Half the time these aren't even airline employees.
Come to think of it, it's been a long time since I've gotten questioned if my luggage has been under my control etc..
