The exact name-matching thing is a requirement on the airline side of stuff. Check-in, reservation, etc.
At the TSA checkpoint itself, close approximations are quite good enough (i.e.; "Tim" instead of "Timothy"; "Beth" instead of "Elizabeth" - they're both perfectly acceptable).
If the exact name-matching is being rolled out to the actual checkpoints, then I missed something somewhere because it's news to me.
