According to my records the YRTWSTAR1 from the U.S. should be currently only $2604 (prices checked about 4 weeks ago). Probably there is no need for you (besides non-cost-wise ones) to start the RTW ticket in Iceland.
Major pricing adjustments IIRC on all *Alliance RTW fares had been introduced in Feb/Mar 09 as a response to some tumbling currencies (ISK, KRW, ...).
Since then for me Iceland seems to be no more attractive cost wise to start a RTW journey on *Alliance.
However, you can recheck the prices from both countries easily by using the *Alliance RTW tool!
