That's not quite the way that UA does it. They're even nicer about it and only use the origin-destination mileage if all upgrades clear (which is what can get you, say LAX-BOS-SFO for 1 cert). I think the suggestion above is to use the total for the upgraded portions. So, whereas UA would treat BOS-DFW-LAS as 2381 miles for 5 certs and AA now treats it as 1562/1055 for 7 stickers, Dave would have it be 2617 for 6 stickers.

At least, I think that's what Dave has in mind.
