Sure, but you now have to reclear security regardless of origin and destination. So the only difference between going through the Flight Connection Centre and going landside is that the immigration is in a different place.
You don't go through immigration when using flight connections, you only go through security. Immigration at Heathrow can take a while (over an hour once for me) and is best avoided.
