Europe allows 30 or 36 hours, and some US airlines used to. Then the TSA discovered that only terrorists would want to check in more than 24 hours ahead and saved us all by implementing rules preventing the airlines from letting you check in farther in advance.

I would imagine there is some technical cutoff point where it becomes an issue for airline IT systems to allow checkin (and related changes) days/weeks/months in advance. Think a AAA-BBB-CCC-AAA trip with BBB as a two day stopover. You check in for all three flights and get boarding passes. You skip BBB-CCC, but already have a boarding pass for CCC-AAA when the airline cancels the rest of your reservation. I'm sure they could figure ways to handle it, but probably don't want to deal with it.

The 24 hour rule is TSA though.
