I decided to see whether I could get Starwood to match my Hilton status last night. I phoned up Starwood and spoke to a representative. She asked me to fax a copy of my Hilton card to her. A couple of hours later my Starwood account showed up as now being Platinum and I received an email to let me know.

Seems pretty good service to me.
