I thought of doing this on international flights, booking a cheap coach seat and then using miles to fly first or business.
It sometimes is certainly cheaper to do it this way, I book a lot of last minute flights, so it would be a nice option especially when there are so many promotions tied into flying now. DBEQM + UK25K/50K.
Also if an upgrade from coach to Business is not available then you also have a nice insurance policy to fly first for an additional 62.5K Miles.
Its sometimes difficult to retain EXP status and use all your miles + EVIPS.
Unfortunately I suppose you cant check in twice into two different cabins

Seriously it is not all that different than musicians who book a second seat for their basoon, or sousaphone, or whatever. I can see it now- I book a premium seat using miles for my harmonica, and then just after departure we switch seats.
