A nice side benefit for UA on these fees is that e-certs cannot be used to pay them (or at least the e-certs I have). This essentially lowers the value of the e-cert. On many of my recent TATL flights, the taxes, fees and surcharges made up about 50% of the total price.

Ah, now I see why UA is so keen to retain its fuel surcharges. It's a bit like double-dipping, I think.
