Maybe we should take the train from Dublin to Galway, or Dublin to Killarney, and rent a car near the train station ( I must have Automatic). Either one looks to be about three and a half hours by train, maybe longer by car. We could then spend the next six (6) nights driving between Galway and Killarney, or Killarney to Gallway.
Either way we could spend our night near Killarney in Kenmare?
How does that sound?

I'd like to make my first day of driving in Ireland as stress free as possible. Where should we begin.
Should we pick up the car near the hotel?
Should we take a train or cab to a pick up site farther from the center of the city?
Should we return to Dublin Airport and rent there?
Should we take the train to Galway, or Cork or somewhere else, and rent there?
We've probably got more places to stay , then we'll really get to, so I know we'll have to cut some. But so far, Ardmore ( The Cliff House hotel), Waterford, Kinsale, Kenmare, Dingle , Doolin, County Clair, Galway. that kind of lays out the area we'd like to travel in. But don't want to be checking in and out of a new hotel every night.
