Delay can happen at LAX, as US often scan checked bags. Once (18 months ago), our golf bags were delayed a couple of days and lost according to AF tracking system (no idea where they were). I had to call AF at LAX to get someone to find out that they had never cleared US customs and were unattended in some corner. Then I got them the next day. Was flying F and Plat, so that helped get more attention.
