What possibly could the logic have been to return to Toronto? 4 hours into a flight to LHR is well over half way (block time is under 7 hours for the whole trip), and they would've burned well into the reserves to make a return to YYZ. And if there was a pressing safety issue, there were plenty of closer places to divert than YYZ or even YUL for that matter.
I'm kind of scratching my head.... Certainly they could've had any issue fixed at LHR for less than the half-million (or more) $$ this unscheduled diversion would have cost..
Actually, if the position given is correct, it would have been closer to YYZ, at 1423 nautical miles, vs. 1710 for LHR. Of course, YUL would have been even closer, at 1149.
