All hand luggage taken away from all passengers upon boarding [in KEF]
On Saturday, I was flying KEF-DUS on LH. As the flight was operated by a CRJ900, there was the usual "delivery at aircraft" cart (although it was situated directly on the tarmac at the boarding gate rather than next to the plane - one could simply walk 50m to the plane).
The gate attendants (from IGS) then wanted to hand "Delivery at aircraft" tags to me, which I refused since I had checked most of my luggage and only had a small rucksack with me. However, the gate attendant insisted that all hand luggage had to be gate-checked. Since I was not willing to do that I pointed out that only large wheel-aboards have to be gate-checked. I also said that I was not going to check my bag as it will easily fit the CRJ bins (and neither was my girlfriend). Under a somewhat evil glare from the gate attendant we walked off and boarded with our hand luggage.
As far as I could see, none of the other passengers dared say anything (or did not care, or did not know better), since all of them walked into the aircraft empty-handed. I pointed out to the flight attendants that the gate attendants must have misunderstood the instructions, to which they agreed (but didn't do anything about it). Boarding was delayed by probably 10 minutes since people had to unpack their bags and take out laptops, or other items they had to take aboard.
After arrival at DUS, I saw how comical the situation was: The "delivery at aircraft" cart was full with tiny bags - even some small textile bags smaller than an A4 paper! I only saw one bag that was large enough to have been legitimately gate-checked.
In my view, something must have gone wrong in the communication somewhere between LH and IGS/KEF airport. It has to be said that this flight, along with a KEF-HAM flight leaving at the same time, were the first LH flights this season from KEF (I am not sure when LH last flew to KEF). I guess that KEF also has little experience with jets as small as a CRJ.
Do you think I should contact LH so that this can be put right for the next flights next Saturday? Whom shall I contact?
