How to refund one PAX on a 2-PAX itinerary?

My wife and I booked travel SFO/ORD in July. At this time we have an outbound S and return T>NC. These are combined on 1 single reservation. The total is $588 as we bought the tickets awhile ago when SFO/ORD was cheap.

Now we are considering these 2 changes:
1. My wife has different return date
2. I will cancel my itin itself - if possible!

Is this even possible? How much will the fees be?

Would I be better off cancelling both of us and just booking a Standard or Saver Award for my wife? She's not going to reach 1P for 2010 so I'm not sure if it's that necessary to make the effort for EQM. What would be the cancellation fees?

If it is possible to cancel one or both PAX, will we receive vouchers in the mail, or do we just use the ticket # to apply towards payment of future trips? I fear we'd need to redeem the ticket # at UA counter at an airport?

Thanks,
Michael (remembering the old old days when UA had several offices in San Francisco!)
