There should be no problem short-checking your luggage and exiting through Canadian C&I. It is always a good idea to let AC know that you won't be taking a segment, although if you select a 23 hr "stopover" I'm pretty sure they won't be able to check you in for the YVR-SFO flight at LHR because the flight is on the following day. (As an aside, if you really do have a 23 hr stopover for a domestic flight and you've upgraded, be sure to have a notation in your PNR. I've sometimes had problems at check-in for that final segment.
