I'm certain it's not deer for two reasons. First, there is no way that deer could make it into the garden even if they wanted to - I live in a row of terraced houses backing onto the back gardens of another row of terraced houses. It would be impossible for deer to hop all the fences. Second, I have actually seen a fox in the garden on at least four occasions in the past year, most times late at night or very early in the morning. Once I was watering the grass and it hopped over the fence, looked me in the eye, and hopped back before I could gather my wits and spray it with water!
