If you're flying via the US, I would suggest Europe-SFO (LH had some good fares and connections for the dates I was looking at), then connect to UA (etc) in Y.

If you travel via the US the trick seems to be to do it so that you can connect on the same days in both directions and avoid the need for an overpriced F overnight flight from the US-HNL, or a very long connection in LAX.

Trouble is a lot of the flight times don't allow one to do this so you need to plan it very carefully!
I am refering to redemptions and the OP stating that biz availability from HNL to the mainland is scarce. On the ANA tool one needs to look for F class n leiu of C class. The next sector can be in C and only pay C miles for the whole thing, hence no need to talk about overpriced flights. On the return there are flights that allow same day return i.e. by taking the 07:30 (I think) flight from HNL-LAX and then onwards from there. I think there is a similar timed flight via SFO.
