Now, if the same person asked again and again, I can see your point. I asked this time as it came up in coiversation with a collegue that he was flying to Seattle, could check in in 3 hours time, couldn't select seats next to each other yet but he had been offered an upgrade really cheap. I thought asking here was a good idea. I certainly don't want to download some software and pay for a key to use it for a one-off situation - especially as I wouldn't be able to run it at work anyway and hence it would have been useless.
I take your point, and it's not the right thread for this discussion but it seems that there are an increasing number of people coming on here with the view of wanting something for free that is available at a minimal cost elsewhere. It doesn't really fit into one side of the community ethos.
Oh, and Expertflyer is a website. No downloading needed. It even works on an iPhone.
