Because kind people provide the answers. In the same way as people ask to be guested into lounges because people provide the access. Do you really think that's a problem? I see it as an advantage of forums like this, a bit of "community".
Now, if the same person asked again and again, I can see your point. I asked this time as it came up in coiversation with a collegue that he was flying to Seattle, could check in in 3 hours time, couldn't select seats next to each other yet but he had been offered an upgrade really cheap. I thought asking here was a good idea. I certainly don't want to download some software and pay for a key to use it for a one-off situation - especially as I wouldn't be able to run it at work anyway and hence it would have been useless.
