I have an award booking LHR-NRT-HNL for November which was booked without any issue.

Doing it this way is 2 overnight flights as opposed to doing it all in one long day the other way though but if you are up front this should be ok, but in Y I would definately prefer to do it via LAX/SFO. On the plus side for me I find going via NRT saves me a day off work as I can go to LHR on the Wednesday night after a full day in the office and arrive NRT Thursday morning ready for a day of relaxation. Going via LAX means you have to depart early in the day. Plus flying via NRT also saves 1 night hotel cost.

Its not that much more than going via LAX and not as bad as flying LHR-SIN-SYD which I find quite easy but I depends what your threashold is.
