I agreed with you. I don't think many of us pay our way. When someone say they pay their own way to get status, it could mean they have their own business that will eventually cover their expenses or they have so much $$$$$ that they can do this without worry - unlike some of us poor souls who work for soulless companies.
BTW - The company in question has a fictional relationship to HAL in the movie 2001 a Space Odyssey. I just found this out when I read its new travel policy.
