As one who has traveled armed on airplanes, one of the first major rules is not to give up the gun to anyone. You may be denied boarding if the Captain dosent want armed LEOs onboard.... but Ive never heard of that happening.
"There might just have been a good reason for the gun to be on the flight. I have known people involved with transproting of highly classified material who were require to be armed, but when they got on a plane they hand the weapon over to someone of authority, most of the time the polit. However this could have been some thing like this we do not know."
