You are avoiding an airline because of one incident seven or more years ago??!! (KLM stopped serving STN in 2002)
And you could (and should) have claimed for your transport from LHR to STN. Unfortunately airlines look upon LON airports as being interchangeable, so if a flight to one LON airport gets cancelled they will rebook you to one of the other ones. However, I have never come across a legacy airline that has refused to provide/pay for transport between London airports on those occasions.
Ryanair, on the other hand, will just cancel flights and give people the choice of either travelling on the next available Ryanair flight which could be several days away, or not travelling at all.
