IMO, I booked it properly/legally through the Hilton system for X amount of points. The fact that Hilton changes the amount of points required after I have made my reservation should be of no consequence to me, I should still receive the award I booked for the original amount of points deducted.

Perhaps you're right. But with over 100 nights in 2001 and the way Hilton gives points for profile updates, online bookings ect... I didn't feel it mattered that much to me personally. If I didn't have the required points for the new reward level then I might have made an argument.
