I would not make this assumption at all. UFC is not always offered even if there are plenty of seats available. If it's not offered in OLCI you can always ask at the airport.

And, if you cancel checkin you do not lose your seats. Cancelling checkin is not the same as offloading yourself from the flight..only an agent can "offload" you. You still hold a confirmed seat, you're just not checked in.

Regarding cancelling checkin, I have had 0% luck un-checking in and then re-checking in and it has forced me to see an agent at the airport every single time. In my cases though I had already been upgraded or had upgrades pending so that may have gummed up the works somehow.
