They might have been out of range for radio contact on VHF, and HF doesn't always work reliably.
This is a sad day and my thoughts are with the Friends and family of everyone on board. If the estimates of where the plane was are correct then they may well have been out of VHF range and HF through a thunderstorm can be hit and miss. Do AF fit their aircraft with ELT's? I know BA do and that it may be a requirement but I don't know about AF.
