Sounded more like the FAs just didn't want to be bugged when they were reading their magazines than security policy.
Only heard that on that flight, so I'm willing to bet it was a made up policy for that flight.

I heard on an AA flight last week that it was a "security-related" "federal law"

that prohibited the passenger from waiting near an emergency exit door. This was said by an FA when one passenger was waiting by the lavatory -- for the occupied lavatory -- and doing so in order to not interrupt the cabin service from FAs who were going back and forth down the aisle. This was at the very back of the plane.
On long-haul flights, it's natural for passengers who are exercising a bit to avoid the risks of DVT to stand around or walk by the galleys and adjacent emergency exit doors yet some FAs are claiming that this is prohibited.
