Better day trips from Rome would be Tivoli, Frascati and the other Castelli Romani, Ostia Antica, Civita di Bagnoregio. If you push it, you could also include some Umbrian hill towns, Orvieto being the closest.</font>

Seriously, flightrisk offers some great suggestions for day-trips closer to Rome. Although there are a zillion things to see and do in Rome, getting out in the countryside is the best way to experience Italy.
I guess I'm just very fond of the countryside in Tuscany.
