I've done about 25+ international MRs and vacations in the last 3 years and have been secondary screening twice.
One time this spring at ORD I had forgotten to sign my form and the agent flagged me over to the red lane for a bag check. They were quick, courteous, and professional and asked a few questions, but seemed to be most intrigued about the concept of a MR.
The second time I was heavily screened was in LAX coming back from a trip to Thailand and Singapore. Not sure for the reason, but my bags were searched and the agent wanted to search my laptop for pictures. I had no reason to object because I never carry indecent material on my laptop when traveling. The agent asked me a few questions and once I stated who I worked for the agent said everything was good. I wasn't a big fan of such a thorough search, but the agent was courteous and respectful.
I've been asked a few questions when at the counter and when handing in my form, but explaining a MR always works and often amuses the officers.
In comparison, I have never been able to get past UK customs without being grilled for 5 minutes. No idea what flags I set off, but I can't think why young, gainfully employed, clean cut, white, German last name, and from the USA sets off the alarms ever time. This is one thing I find insulting about the UK. I have been there about 10 times and have never caused a problem, yet whenever I enter that country I am always treated like a potential criminal. I should add that the UK is the only country that ever gives me trouble anyplace in the world.
