UA abandoned JFK because it was #5 internationally among U.S. carriers in the NYC market, with no hope of gaining ground. It was the right decision for UA, and as a consumer you still have many options to choose from. Besides, why limit yourself to LHR as your only option to MM. The West is best and plenty of flights leave from JFK out this way.
