Take the UM travel, something I've done maybe 3 times in 10 years.
I fill out the forms. I escort the boy to the gate. A GA takes the forms, slings it around his neck and walks him down and seats him with other UM's. At the other end, a FA/GA walks him up, meets my wife, checks ID and its over. In flight, whether the UM needs no attention or 100% of the FA's attention, there is no added cost. So, is there really $25 of cost involved in UM travel outside the cost of the forms?
Obviously yes when a flight is diverted or something else goes amiss but having a UM is only the start of the problems at that point and is the rare exception, not the rule.
Isn't the good will of providing this free service worth more than starting "the slippery slope" of fees?
In other words, to me, this is all about the extra revenue and nothing else.
