I have a plastic bottle (claims to be BPA free) that I just make sure is shaken out a few times and I go through OK in the US and Canada.

Sometimes I leave it in the bottle part of my backpack so it is outside and easy to visually assess. Other times it's in my bag and still doesn't warrant examination.

With a metal bottle you may or may not have it examined, but there is nothing against an empty bottle.
