Without linking accounts into a Mutual Fund, both you and your spouse can participate in certain promotions separately (BT2YM and EWRDC in the recent past come to mind), while with Mutual Fund you are limited to just one promo bonus (in case you don't know, 50K points after 4 stays in each of the abovementioned promos).
